The benchmark in human skin science
“
“What is needed in order to reduce the failure rate of novel drugs in clinical development are techniques that provide a better insight in PK and PD processes in clinical trials such as the dOFM and the use of human tissue as provided by Genoskin.”
“
“This study underscores the power of combining new approach methodologies, such as our advanced viable human skin model, and advanced bioanalytics with innovative biologics. The data generated here provide a strong foundation for this exciting testing platform and continued clinical advancement of MTX-001.”

Frequently asked questions
How does ex vivo human skin differ from reconstructed skin models, and why does it matter for non-clinical studies?
Is ex vivo human skin accepted for IND submissions under the FDA Modernization Act 2.0?
How reproducible are Genoskin's results given that models come from different human donors?
How long is ex vivo human skin viable, and what's the typical turnaround time for a Genoskin study?
Genoskin’s patented biostabilization technology keeps ex vivo human skin alive and immunocompetent for up to 7 days post-excision, which is sufficient for the vast majority of safety, tolerability, and multi-timepoint dose-response studies. For custom CRO studies, most projects kick off within 2 weeks of contract signature and are completed within 4 to 8 weeks from initiation to final report. Where does Genoskin ship, and is the skin ethically sourced?
Genoskin ships ex vivo skin models globally from laboratories in Toulouse, France and Salem, Massachusetts, serving customers across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and beyond. Every model comes from skin donated by patients undergoing elective surgery, given freely with full informed consent through our partner hospital network in France and the United States. No skin is purchased and participation is never incentivized. Every sample is fully traceable, approved by independent ethics committees, and handled under strict donor confidentiality protocols.

From donated skin to reliable human data
Step 1
Ethically sourced
Human skin from consented surgical donations, processed within hours. Every sample is ethically sourced.
Step 2
Biostabilized
Patented technology keeps tissue alive and immunocompetent for up to 7 days, with 14 immune cell types naturally preserved.
Step 3
Human-relevant data
Translational endpoints: histology, multiplex cytokine analysis, spatial biology, flow cytometry, and bioinformatics.
Real and alive ex vivo human skin. Immunocompetent for 7 days. The most predictive non-clinical model available today.
Ex vivo human skin vs. reconstructed skin vs. animal models
The most predictive non-clinical model depends on what you’re testing. Here’s how Genoskin’s ex vivo human skin compares.
| Feature | Genoskin — Ex vivo human skin | Reconstructed Skin | Animal Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| All native cell types | ✓Full immune compartment | ✗Keratinocytes only, no immune cells | ✗0 human immune cells, cross-species gap |
| Human-relevant data | ✓Direct clinical translation | ~Partial | ✗Non-human biology, poor translation |
| Full skin layers | ✓Epidermis + dermis + hypodermis | ✗Epidermis only | ~All layers, but anatomically different |
| Skin appendages | ✓Hair follicles, sweat glands preserved | ✗None | ~Different structure |
| Immune response profiling | ✓Spatial biology + multiomics | ✗No immune cells | ✗Reduced translational relevance |
| Ethical sourcing | ✓Consented human donation | ~Human-derived cells, varying consent rigor | ✗Animal use required |
| NAMs regulatory direction | ✓Aligned with FDA & EMA frameworks | ~Limited context of use | ~Reduced regulatory preference post-FDA Modernization Act 2.0 |
About Genoskin
Human Skin. Real answers.
Founded in Toulouse in 2011 by Dr. Pascal Descargues (PhD, CNRS), Genoskin pioneered the world’s first biostabilized ex vivo human skin platform, a breakthrough that finally bridges the gap between lab models and clinical reality. We’ve since expanded our technology with HypoSkin®, the only injectable ex vivo model incorporating the hypodermis, and have rigorously characterized immunocompetency across both platforms.
Today, from our labs in Toulouse and Salem, MA, we partner with 500+ customers across pharma, biotech, vaccines, cosmetics, and academic research, helping them make better decisions, faster, with human skin that behaves like human skin.
