How does ex vivo human skin differ from reconstructed skin models, and why does it matter for non-clinical studies?

Ex vivo human skin is real, donor-consented human tissue kept alive outside the body, retaining the full biological complexity of living skin. Reconstructed models are built from a limited number of cell types, typically keratinocytes only, and cannot replicate the immune compartment, skin appendages, or native tissue architecture. For non-clinical studies, this distinction is critical: ex vivo skin generates human-relevant data that translates directly to clinical reality, while reconstructed models produce results from a simplified approximation of human biology.

Is ex vivo human skin accepted for IND submissions under the FDA Modernization Act 2.0?

Yes, ex vivo human skin is accepted for IND submissions under the FDA Modernization Act 2.0, which explicitly recognizes New Approach Methodologies including ex vivo human tissue as valid alternatives to animal testing. Genoskin models have been cited directly in IND submissions with no FDA follow-up on local tolerance. The regulatory direction is reinforced internationally: the UK confirmed in 2023 there is no legal requirement for animal testing in medical research, and the FDA announced a phased reduction of animal testing for monoclonal antibodies in 2025.

How reproducible are Genoskin's results given that models come from different human donors?

Genoskin’s results are reproducible because all models are produced under standardized, ISO 9001-aligned protocols regardless of donor: same processing time, same culture conditions, same quality controls. Donor-to-donor variability is present, but it is scientifically meaningful rather than a limitation. It mirrors the genetic and biological diversity of the patient population your compound will eventually treat, making data more translationally robust. Genoskin ships ex vivo skin models globally from laboratories in Toulouse, France and Salem, Massachusetts, serving customers across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and beyond. Every model comes from skin donated by patients undergoing elective surgery, given freely with full informed consent through our partner hospital network in France and the United States. No skin is purchased and participation is never incentivized. Every sample is fully traceable, approved by independent ethics committees, and handled under strict donor confidentiality protocols.
